Five Morningside College faculty members and one academic department are the first recipients of the Dr. William C. Yockey Assessment Awards, which recognize outstanding efforts to improve student learning at Morningside.
Faculty members who received awards for general education courses they teach include Dr. Rachel Robson, assistant professor of biology, for her Principles of Biology II course, and Dr. Greg Guelcher, professor of history, for his Asian Civilizations course. Another award was presented to a faculty team that teaches an elementary statistics course. The faculty members include Regina Bade, adjunct math instructor; Dr. Mike Calvillo, assistant professor of psychology; and Dr. Chris Spicer, assistant professor of mathematical sciences.
The Morningside College Nursing Department received a department/program award in recognition of department-wide efforts to assess and improve student learning. Nursing department faculty members include Dr. Jackie Barber, Lori Doeschot, Sharlene Georgesen, Cheryl Harrington and Dr. Mary Kovarna.
A $2,500 cash prize is included with each award, which covered courses taught at Morningside during the 2010-2011 academic year. Dr. Joel Frederickson, associate dean of institutional assessment and accreditation, at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., served as outside evaluator for the awards.
The family of the late Dr. William C. Yockey, a 1949 Morningside graduate and a chemistry professor at the college for more than 30 years, established the annual awards in his name.
