“Earth Mirrors,” an outdoor sculpture installation by Minnesota artist Andréa Stanislav, has a permanent home near the Eppley Fine Arts Building on the Morningside College campus.
“Earth Mirrors” consists of 10 two- to four-ton limestone rocks that have mirror-polished stainless steel plates attached to their surfaces. The rocks are grouped and positioned so that the mirror surfaces reflect each other, Eppley and the surrounding campus area.
On April 12, two trucks carrying the 10 limestone rocks arrived on campus from Weber Stone Company in Anamosa, Iowa, where each of the rocks was quarried and fabricated. The next day, a crane brought to the Morningside campus just for the sculpture installation started lifting the rocks into place, under the artist’s direction, on the specially prepared sculpture site near Eppley. A dedication ceremony the evening of April 13 marked completion of the installation.
The sculpture, commissioned by Morningside College, is the final element to be put in place for the college’s Hilker Campus Mall. The mall is a pedestrian area and green space that starts at the back of Lewis Hall, extends south past the Hickman-Johnson-Furrow Learning Center and terminates at a parking lot off of Garretson Avenue near Eppley.
Stanislav is a contemporary artist whose practice includes sculpture, video installation, collage constructions and public art. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions around the world. In addition to “Earth Mirrors” at Morningside College, Stanislav’s other public art commissions and projects for 2011 include “Amphitheater Lumen,” Miller Theater, University of Oregon, Eugene, Ore.; and “Nightmare, Northern Spark - Nuit Blanche,” a public video project that will travel down the Mississippi River.
