The Morningside College music department recently announced the winners of the 2008 Elizabeth Sammons Voice Scholarship competition held Tuesday, April 15, on the college campus.
Taking first place was Britt Gebhardt, a sophomore from Sioux City. Second place went to Katie Gorden, a sophomore from Le Mars, Iowa. Megan Beery, a sophomore from Shenandoah, Iowa, received an honorable mention.
First and second place winners will receive a monetary reward that can be used to defray costs of applied voice lesson fees for the coming academic year.
Students were evaluated on their performance of two songs and/or arias. Cheryl Koch, voice teacher at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., served as the judge for this year’s competition.
The Elizabeth Sammons Voice Scholarship competition has been held annually since the 1960s and is open to all students of voice at Morningside College. The scholarship is named in honor of Elizabeth Sammons, a longtime Sioux City resident.
