Bulgarian dancer Venti Petrov to speak on campus

Venti Petrov, co-director of Lumiere Ballet in Oakdale, N.Y., will be the featured speaker for “Entrepreneurship in the Arts: Turning Passion into Profits” at Morningside College on Thursday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the UPS Auditorium of the Lincoln Center, 3627 Peters Avenue. The public is invited free of charge.

Petrov will talk about his journey to the United States from Bulgaria at the age of 17 and his subsequent success as a dancer, choreographer, teacher, and studio owner. In 1990, he received a bronze medal at the New York International Ballet Competition held at the Lincoln Center in New York City. After a brief return to Bulgaria, he returned to New York and performed in Lumiere Ballet's initial project, an original rendition of Menotti's "The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore." He became a founding principal male dancer and co-director of Lumiere Ballet.

He received his formal training at the State Choreographic Institute in Sofia, Bulgaria, and continued his training at the New York Conservatory of Dance. He has performed in more than 20 states as a principal guest artist and choreographer with groups such as Ballet Arizona, Tulsa Ballet, Ballet Arlington, Suzanne Farrell Ballet, and the Omaha Theater Ballet.

Petrov will also be the featured guest this weekend at the Iowa Dance Competition in Sioux City. The event is sponsored by the Siouxland Civic Dance Association. For more information on this event go to www.siouxlandcivicdance.com.
