Setup Instructions:

  1. Start Outlook Express from the Programs folder on the Start Menu.
  2. If this is your first time using Outlook Express, a window will pop up asking for your name, enter it in the box, and click Next to continue.
  3. In the next screen, it will ask if you already have an email address, or want to sign up with hotmail for one, select that you already have one, and enter your Morningside email address in the top box (ex. abc123@morningside.edu). After filling in the box, click Next to continue.
  4. In the next screen, do as the image to the right shows, and select the second option, "IMAP", from the drop down menu at the top, then enter "webmail.morningside.edu" into both the Incoming mail and Outgoing mail boxes below and click Next to continue.
  5. On the following screen it will ask you for your username and password.  These are the same as the ones you currently use to access Webmail through the internet interface.  Type each one into the corresponding box and click Next to continue to the final page.  If you do not know these, please contact the helpdesk at x5544 and they will be able to help you out.
  6. The final page just tells you that you successfully setup your account in Outlook Express.  Just click Finish to exit the setup Wizard.
  7. After clicking finish, a new window will pop up warning you that there aren't any folders to show for this account and asking if you would like to view the list of available folders now, answer "Yes" to import your folders.
  8. After clicking Yes, it will pop up a list of folders on your Webmail account.  Just click "Ok" in the bottom right corner of the box to import the folders from your account and take you to the main Outlook Express screen.

Main Screen:

This bar, found along the left side of the screen is where it keeps a list of all the folders on your Webmail account, as well as the Outlook Express default folders.

At the top of the image to the left under "Local Folders" are the default Outlook express Folders, these are not used for anything but the Outbox folder.  Messages will be placed in the Outbox while they are waiting to be sent.

Near  the bottom of the image to the left under "webmail.morningside.edu" are the folders Outlook Express downloaded from the Webmail server.  These folders include your Inbox, your Sent Items folder, and your Drafts folder and will be the folders you use when working with mail. Also included here are folders named Calendar, Contacts, Note, Task and Trash.  Also, any other folders you have created using webmail and Eudora will be placed here as well.  The Inbox, Sent Items, and Drafts folders serve the same purpose they did on Webmail, but the Calendar, Contacts, Note, and Trash folder different.

The Calendar does not have the nice user interface like in Webmail, but rather each appointment is an individual message containing all the details, the Contacts, note, and Task folders are the same way.

The Trash folder is a different issue.  Unlike Webmail, when you tell Outlook Express to delete a message it will mark it for deletion by striking out the name and details of the message.  You must then select Purge Deleted Messages from the Edit menu to actually delete the message.

WARNING : When you delete a message with IMAP it is not moved to a deleted items folder, but instead is permanently gone. Be sure you really want to delete the message.  If you are unsure whether you want to completely get rid of the message, but don't want it in your Inbox, you may drag and drop it into one of the existing folders, including the Trash folder, or you may create additional folders to store messages by right clicking the webmail.morningside.edu right above the inbox, and selecting New Folder from the popup menu.  After selecting to move it to the new folder, Outlook will strike-out the name of the message, denoting that it is no longer in the current folder.

Attachments :  In Outlook Express attachments are left on the server instead of being downloaded into a specific folder on your hard drive, if you want to open an attachment or save it to the local machine, you must first open the message it is contained in.  All of the attachments that are attached to the messagewill be listed below the subject of the document.  Just double click the attachment and select whether you want to open it, or save it.
