All
campus email is routed through a dedicated computer called
Webmail and checked with a web client called SquirrelMail. Like the mailroom in Lewis
Hall, Webmail is the central clearing house that receives,
distributes, and sends all of your email.
You
can work directly with Webmail by browsing to https://squirrel.morningside.edu/webmail, this will bring up the SquirrelMail logon screen. Working directly with Webmail is a powerful way
to use your email because it allows you to work from any computer
in any location that has internet access. Working directly
with Webmail also assures that your email is kept safe because
Webmail is well maintained, protected from viruses, and backed
up often.
However,
using Webmail does have its limitations. For people
who use email a lot, you may choose to use an email client
to get more features and functionality. Using an email client
is like asking your secretary to go to the mail room and get
your mail for you. Eudora is a common email client.
Outlook Express is another common email client. If you use
a client, like Eudora, you can filter messages, keep an advanced
address book, drag and drop messages in your folders, and
more. However, remember that once Eudora gets your email
for you, it is no longer on Webmail and no longer universally
available or secure.
Some
email clients can be configured to use the I nternet
M essage A ccess P rotocol, (IMAP).
This setting can give you the best of both worlds- a feature
rich client program that works directly with Webmail.
It is like having a secretary that walks over to the mailroom
every 5 minutes and keeps copies of your work in both places.
Not only do you get advanced features of an email client,
but your email is still secure on Webmail and still available
from anywhere.
Eudora's
IMAP does not work well with Morningside's equipment. However,
Outlook Express's IMAP works great. For this reason and others
Eudora will no longer be installed on Morningside computers,
and Outlook Express is now our favored email client program.
Using your
email from your office:
If
you need more functionality with your email, and want to use
an email client, it works best to configure Outlook Express
to use IMAP (see below).
Using
your email from home:
Most
students, faculty and staff at Morningside use Webmail/SquirrelMail
directly from home. Go to the Morningside
Portal, at https://squirrelmail.morningside.edu/webmail
