Dr.
James Miller was a very good history and political science professor here at Morningside College. He put his heart and
soul into teaching, and literally died at his job. On August
27 during a faculty workshop, James suffered a heart attack
and passed away a few hours later at a Sioux City Hospital.
Dr.
Miller raised his voice for academic quality, and opposed many attempts
to reallocate funds from education. He was a member of many
different associations... The American Historical Association,
the National Oral History Association, and the Private College
Advisory Committee for Iowa's Sixth Congressional District.
Dr. Miller
was a native of Wichita, Kansas. He attended high school in
Kansas City, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree
from Park College,
in Parkville, MO in 1952. In 1953 he received his Master
of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota, and obtained
his Ph.D in 1968 from Clark University, Worcester, Mass.
Dr. Miller
also served in the U.S. Army Infantry from 1953-1955. |

The
college thought it was appropriate to honor James Miller for
his many fine contributions he made to the campus. Dr. Miller
was very active in the campus life. He served as president
of the Morningside Chapter of the American Association of
University Professors and advisor to the Collegian Reporter.
On top of this he was chosen as the outstanding professor
for the 1963-64 academic year. Miller was only 44 when he
died, and he had been a member of the faculty since 1960.
A
memorial fund and an award to honor him have been established
at the college. The James M. Miller Honor Award in History
and Political Science is presented annually at the college's
convocation to an "outstanding and creative student" in
history and political science. The award is funded by the
James M. Miller Memorial Fund, which has been restricted
solely for that purpose |
