has been selected to operate a Volunteer in Service to America
(VISTA) AmeriCorps program. The program provides for
three volunteers, who will serve in various capacities at
the college through 2007.
"This program is
a perfect fit with Morningside's mission to cultivate civic
responsibility and community service on campus," said Dr.
Patrick McKinlay, associate professor of history and political
science, who oversees the AmeriCorps/VISTA program.
Katie Allard, from
Sioux City , is currently serving as the service-learning
coordinator for Morningside. She graduated from Morningside
in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and takes over
the position from Jason Walker, an AmeriCorps/VISTA volunteer
at Morningside from 2002 to 2003. Allard serves as a liaison
between the college and various non-profit agencies within
the Siouxland community to support the college's service learning
Anne Hulse, from
South Sioux City , Neb. , graduated from Morningside in 2003
with a bachelor's degree in physical education. Among her
other duties, Hulse is working closely with Project HOPE,
a non-profit, scholarship-based program designed to assist
underserved youth with "Help and Opportunity to Pursue their
Education" (HOPE). The program pairs college students with
students in grades six through 12, providing advocacy,
mentoring, career exploration, and support.
program has been in existence for nearly 40 years and currently
supports more than 6,000 volunteers who serve in hundreds
of non-profit agencies across the country. Volunteers work
to combat illiteracy, improve health services, increase housing
opportunities, and promote welfare-to-work initiatives.
Funding for the
VISTA program was secured through the Corporation for National
and Community Service. Volunteers receive an annual monetary
stipend through AmeriCorps/VISTA and room and board through
Morningside College .
In exchange for
a year of service, each volunteer will receive an education
award or end-of-service award that can be used to pay for
college or to repay qualified student loans.
