The Morningside Young Artist Piano Competition will take place concurrently with the Iowa Piano Competition, sponsored by the Sioux City Symphony, on March 9-10, 2007. The Morningside College event is designed to showcase the very finest high school pianists in the Midwest and to provide educational experiences, performance opportunities, cash awards, and substantial scholarships for piano study at Morningside College. The Morningside Young Artist Piano Competition will be adjudicated by Enrico Elisi.

Awards will be presented Friday evening at the Competition Banquet in the Levitt Art Gallery adjacent to Eppley Auditorium.

GRAND PRIZE

• A Performance with the Sioux City Symphony in the Spring 2008 (to be awarded at the discretion of the Music Director of the Sioux City Symphony)
• $300 Cash Award
• Scholarships to Morningside College – up to $16,000

SECOND PRIZE

• $200 Cash Award
• Scholarships to Morningside College – up to $16,000

THIRD PRIZE

• $100 Cash Award
• Scholarships to Morningside College – up to $16,000

KLINE PIANO MERIT SCHOLARSHIP:

contestant at the discretion of the Morningside College Piano Faculty)




EVENTS FOR COMPETITORS TO ATTEND

All contestants are cordially invited to attend the Morningside Young Artist Competition Banquet (Friday evening), as well as the following Artist events in conjunction with the Iowa Piano Competition: Masterclasses with Dr. Alvin Chow and Dr. Karen Shaw (Saturday morning and early afternoon), Chamber Concert with Iowa Piano Competition semi-finalists and area string players (Friday evening), Sioux City Symphony Gala Finals Concert (Saturday evening).




RULES AND APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Eligibility
Open to pianists of all nationalities currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12.

Repertoire requirements
Each contestant must perform three complete works or movements by memory. Works must be chosen from the standard classical repertoire and should be contrasting in style and period. In order to be considered for the performance prize with the Sioux City Symphony, one of the three works must be a movement of a concerto chosen from the list below. Concerto movements must be performed with second piano accompaniment (cuts in long orchestral tuttis are encouraged). If a contestant is unable to bring his/her own accompanist, one can be provided for a fee of $50. An original score (no photo copies) must be included with the application fee. Scores will be returned after the competition. All contestants, including those who choose not to perform a concerto movement, will be considered equally for scholarships and cash awards.

If contestants wish to be eligible to perform a concerto with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, one movement must be selected from one of the following works:

Online applications will be considered complete upon receipt of the application fee.

 



Masterclasses with Dr. Alvin Chow and Dr. Karen Shaw

Applicants interested in performing in one of the masterclass sessions must submit a CD recording with their competition application. The recording must include two complete solo works or movements that the performer would like to play for Dr. Chow or Dr. Shaw. Concertos are not acceptable for the masterclass, but other works may duplicate those performed in the competition. Submitting recordings or being selected to perform in the masterclass will not impact the results of the competition in any way.

ALVIN CHOW

Alvin Chow has appeared throughout North America and in Asia as orchestral soloist and recitalist. In addition, he has performed extensively in duo-piano recitals with his wife Angela Cheng, and his twin brother Alan. A native of Miami, Florida, he graduated as co-valedictorian at the University of Maryland, where he was a student of Nelita True. Mr. Chow received the Victor Herbert Prize in Piano upon graduation from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Sascha Gorodnitzki, and held the Joseph Battista Memorial Scholarship at Indiana University as a student of Menahem Pressler.

Mr. Chow has performed in such major concert halls as the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Weill and Steinway Halls in New York City, and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Presented as soloist in such cities as Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, Detroit, and Miami, Mr. Chow has appeared as soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Pan-Asia Symphony in Hong Kong, and the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg, among others. He has been heard in national broadcasts on National Public Radio's Performance Today and on CBC Radio in Canada.

Mr. Chow has presented master classes and lectures throughout the United States and abroad, including the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Taichung University in Taiwan, Colburn School in Los Angeles, and Indiana University, among many others. During 1987-88 he was the first Fulbright College Visiting Artist in Piano at the University of Arkansas. Formerly a professor at Southwest Missouri State University and the University of Colorado at Boulder, he is currently on the artist faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

ENRICO ELISI

Enrico Elisi has performed in Europe, America, and Asia.  He has won a number of first prizes in national and international competitions, including top awards at such diverse venues as the Venice Competition, and the Oporto International Competition.  An active chamber musician, Enrico Elisi has collaborated with many renowned artists including Baltimore Symphony concertmaster Jonathan Carney, and Chicago Symphony associate concertmaster David Taylor. His most recognized chamber collaboration has been with violinist Qian Zhou, a Long-Thibaud competition winner and Naxos recording artist, with whom he toured China.  Mr. Elisi's repertoire extends from Bach to avant-garde music and he has premiered contemporary works dedicated to him at debut recitals in Toulouse, France, and Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. In fall 2006, Mr. Elisi will premiere a new composition at the 4th International Festival of Contemporary Music, in Lima, Peru.

In Italy, the press lauded Mr. Elisi as "young in years but with a wonderfully rich musicality, a solidly grounded technique, a precise touch, and an enduring respect in his approach to the great masters." He studied at the Peabody Conservatory on full scholarship under Leon Fleisher and served as his mentor's assistant during the Masters and Doctoral degrees. Mr. Elisi also holds two Italian degrees from the Conservatory of Florence and the International Piano Academy of Imola, where he studied with Lazar Berman, Alexander Lonquich and Boris Petrushansky.  Mr. Elisi is active as a teacher and was invited to join the faculty of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2004. He also holds a guest professorship at the China Academy of Arts, in Hangzhou (China) where he is also an artistic adviser.

KAREN SHAW

Karen Shaw first appeared in New York as winner of the Concert Artists Guild Award. Her debut recital prompted critical acclaim from Donal Henahan in the New York Times. She has since performed across the United States, Europe, Mexico and East Asia. Miss Shaw recorded the Rachmaninoff Etudes after a series of triumphant Carnegie Hall recitals. A professor of music at Indiana University, Karen Shaw has formed many prizewinning students. She presents lectures, master classes and workshops throughout the country.

An active performer, teacher, conductor of master classes and lecturer for more than three decades, Professor Shaw also won the Concert Artists Guild Award, and had debuts in New York, London, and Berlin.  She has performed and taught master classes throughout the United States, Europe, and the Far East, and was recognized as a specialist in romantic literature following series of concerts at Carnegie Hall.  She is director of the Silvermine Artists Series in Norwalk, CT.
