Fifties
1959
The Rev. Don and Nancy (Crary) Veglahn
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this summer in Okoboji, Iowa. Nancy recently sold her business, The Book Shop, in Sioux Falls, S.D., which is where the couple resides.

Sixties
1961
Sen. David W. Mulder
retired from his position in the Iowa Statehouse at the conclusion of the 2008 session. Before running for office, Mulder first was a teacher and coach in Sioux Center, Iowa, for 20 years. Then he was an economics professor and golf coach at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, for the next 25 years.  Mulder still has an office at Northwestern College, and he announces for all of the football, volleyball and basketball games.

1963
The Rev. Dave Rogula
retired in June 2007 from his position as pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, Iowa. Dave and his wife, Pamela, now live in Oregon, Ill., where he does some interim ministry serving Leland United Methodist Church in Leland, Ill, which is in the DeKalb District of the Northern Illinois Conference.

1967
Jonathan C. Wilson
was recognized by Best Lawyers in America ® 2007. Wilson is a shareholder of the Davis Brown Law Firm in Des Moines, Iowa, practicing in the business division. Best Lawyers is the oldest peer-review publication in the legal profession and has helped lawyers and clients find legal counsel in unfamiliar jurisdictions or unfamiliar specialties.

Seventies
1970
Dr. Monte Russell
retired from the practice of dentistry on May 1, 2008. He began his practice in Le Mars, Iowa, in 1974 and retired there after 34 years.

The Rev. Gregory R. Wolfe has been appointed as senior pastor at Kalkaska United Methodist Church in Kalkaska, Mich.

1971
William Dykshorn
retired after 37 years as a high school band teacher in Sioux City and Whiting in Iowa and at Rampart High School and Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs, Colo. He and his wife, Marsha, reside in Cheyenne, Wyo.

bill russell directed “Pageant,” a musical spoof of beauty pageants, that played at Stoneham Theatre in Stoneham, Mass., from Sept. 11 to Oct. 5. The book and lyrics were also co-written by russell. In addition to performances of "Pageant" in Massachusetts, russell's Broadway musical "Side Show" was featured at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. "Side Show" was featured as part of the re-opening of the Eisenhower Theater, which took place the first weekend in October.

1973
Marta (Ralston) Nelson
earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., in May 2008. Nelson is one of two assistant directors of choral activities at Sioux City East High School. She co-teaches with her daughter Erin Nelson, who received her teacher certification from Morningside in 1999. Marta is also an elementary music specialist at Sunnyside and Nodland elementary schools in Sioux City. Her husband, Donald Nelson 1973, is a computer instructor at Sioux City East Middle School, and their daughter Brooke Redwine is currently attending Morningside for teacher certification. The entire family was part of Morningside’s July production of “Sideshow,” with Erin on stage as Violet Hilton, Brooke on stage as a chorus member, and Marta and Don in the pit orchestra.

Ron O’Neal was promoted to division vice president of Paper Converting Europe for Sonoco Products Company, one of the world’s largest diversified global packaging companies. He has operational responsibility for Sonoco’s 36 Industrial Products and Consumer packaging plants in 17 European countries. Ron and his wife, Stephanie, live in Brussels, Belgium.

Rex Towns
retired from teaching following the completion of the 2007-08 school year. Towns taught choral music in Sioux City at North High School for 19 years, Hoover Middle School for 12.5 years, and Clark, McKinley and Irving elementary schools for 1.5 years. He has been listed multiple times in Who’s Who in America’s Schools and Universities.

Julie (Rudningen) Kobliska
was promoted to general manager of Copperfield Chimney Supply, a national wholesaler of hearth products that is headquartered in Fairfield, Iowa.

Eighties
1982
Mike Brenner
accepted a position with Hydro Delta Corporation in Monroeville, Pa., as sales manager for the Midwest region. Hydro Delta is a leading manufacturer of geothermal heating and cooling equipment. Mike and his wife, Vicky, live in Winterset, Iowa.

1984
Dr. William A. Irwin
published an article in Volume 100 of the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.” The article stems from his cancer research conducted in Italy concerning how some pesticides can induce novel liver tumors without first causing genetic damage.

1988
Mark Mohl
was named the head men’s basketball coach at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in Mason City, Iowa. Mohl was an assistant coach at NIACC during the 2007-08 season and was previously the head boys' basketball coach at Osage High School in Iowa, where he compiled a 109-70 record in eight seasons and was a district coach of the year in 2005-06.

1990
Michelle Stevenson
accepted a position as office manager at Engineering & Construction Services in Sioux City.

1994
Julie (Smith) Streitenberger
became director of Grandma’s House Day Care in Clarinda, Iowa, in September 2007.

Dimiter Todorov accepted a position as director of North America and International Legal Services for The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, a $3-billion company headquartered in Marysville, Ohio. Todorov’s work time is divided between Ohio and France.

1995
Jacklyn (Brummond) Barber
earned a doctorate in education/health professions education from College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Neb., in May 2008. The research project she completed for her doctoral dissertation was "Nursing Students' Perception of Their Spiritual Awareness After Participating in a Spiritual Workshop and Oral History Project." Barber is an associate professor of nursing education at Morningside. She also was recently elected secretary of the board of directors for the Siouxland Area Chapter of the American Red Cross in Sioux City.

1997
Michael R. Guntren
, general manager of Ray’s Mid-Bell Music in Sioux City, was selected to play tenor sax in the National Association of School Music Dealers (NASMD) Big Band at the 2008 convention in Orlando, Fla.

The NASMD Big Band is composed of music dealers and members of the music industry from across the country. Guntren also plays saxophone in the Magnificent Board of Directors band.

1998
Stephanie (Buettner) Miller
received the Lamp of Learning Award at Mission Middle School in Bellevue, Neb., where she teaches Spanish I and an exploratory class of Spanish, French and German. The Lamp of Learning Award recognizes teachers who go above and beyond working with students in and out of the classroom fostering the importance of life-long and meaningful learning.

Penny Skauge
accepted a position as district sales manager for Post-Bulletin Co. in Rochester, Minn.

2001
Janie (Kuchel) Neilsen
accepted a position as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Proctor & Gamble in Minneapolis, Minn. She was previously an elementary teacher in the Sioux City Schools.

2005
Sarah (Loffswold) Bradbury earned a master's degree in nursing, graduating with a 4.00 grade point average from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing. Bradbury also received her national board license as a certified nurse midwife. She is currently a midwife at the Birth and Women's Center in Topeka, Kan.

2006
Adrienne McElderry
studied for a year in Madrid while earning her master’s degree in Spanish from Middlebury College in Vermont. While in Europe, McElderry visited Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Munich and Istanbul.

Molly (Moser) Scott was named the youth worker for Iowa State University Extension in Woodbury County. She is responsible for assisting with youth programs, including all areas of 4-H such as 4-H recruitment, 4-H entries in the Woodbury County Fair, and 4-H Shooting Sports. She also teaches the extension's Kids A Cookin' program in three Sioux City middle schools.

2008
Lee Kubik
joined the accounting firm Nichols, Rise and Co. in Sioux City as a staff accountant.


DEATHS - In Loving Memory


1963

Joseph L. Faltemier, Brookings, S.D., died March 27, 2008. Faltemier was chair of sociology at Morningside from 1969 until 1975. He also was professor emeritus of rural sociology at South Dakota State University, having taught there from 1975 until 2003. In the early 1970s, Faltemier set up the Social Science Research Center (SSRC) at Morningside College that evaluated the 2.5 Million Alcohol Safety Action Program, which worked to reduce the number of drinking-and-driving deaths and injuries in Sioux City and Woodbury County.
