Fifties
1959
Dr. Robert Mortenson co-authored “Glancing Over Our Shoulder: A History of the University of Nebraska at Omaha College of Education 1908-2008.” He retired from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2000 as associate dean of the college of education and professor of teacher education. Since retirement, Mortenson has served as an external evaluator for the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education

and the U.S. Department of Labor, as well as local school districts and the Nebraska Department of Education.

Joyce (Goodwin) Chestnut recently retired after 14 years of employment at the University of Maryland in College Park. She had previously retired from the U.S. Senate following a 30-year career on Capitol Hill.

Seventies
1978
Tracy Hirt
is the head football coach at Platte/Geddes/Dakota Christian High School in Platte, South Dakota. Hirt led the team to the 2008 Class 11B state semifinals, where they lost against eventual state champion

Tri-Valley.

Karen (June) Boehmer teaches vocal music and is the media specialist for Randolph Public Schools in Randolph, Neb.

1986
Dennis Lauver, president and CEO of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce in Kansas, was appointed to a three-year term on the Affordable Housing Council of the Federal Home Loan Bank office in Topeka, Kan. The council works with the board of directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank to support construction of affordable housing in the four-state district of Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and Oklahoma.

Charles Baughman
is the rehabilitation coordinator for Major League Baseball's Chicago Cubs. He obtained

a master's degree in psychology, specializing in sports psychology, from Capella University in 2008.

Two Thousand
2000
James Guttau’s
firm, Guttau Public Relations, was honored by the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) with two awards for its client, Colorado Springs School District 11. NSPRA recognized the firm for creating outstanding marketing materials as part of the NSPRA 2008 Publications and Electronic Media Awards contest. District 11 won the Award of Excellence and the Award of Merit. Guttau Public Relations is based in Denver, Colo.

Dorothy (DeVries) Ver Steeg, Evanston, Ill., died Sept. 17, 2008. She and her husband, Clarence,

established Morningside’s Ver Steeg Faculty Scholarship Grant to provide support to Morningside

full-time faculty for scholarly research endeavors.

Charles H. Obye, Sun City, Ariz., died Oct. 29, 2008. Obye was the head basketball coach at Morningside

from 1957 to 1973.
