Fifties
1958
Willis and Mary Lou (O’Connor) Shuck 1959 are celebrating their 48th wedding anniversary this fall. They are retired and reside in Plano, Texas - a suburb of Dallas - where they have lived for 47 years. They recently took a three-week trip along the northwestern coast of the United States and Canada. They have three children and one grandchild.

1959

The Rev. Don and Nancy (Crary) Veglahn celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this summer in Okoboji, Iowa. Nancy recently sold her business, The Book Shop, in Sioux Falls, S.D., which is where the couple resides.

Sixties
1962
Sue Oleson
has written several self-help books after completing a master’s degree in educational psychology. Her most recent book, “Cancer Free Naturally,” is about her successful fight against breast cancer through the use of natural methods. She lives in Indio, Calif., and her e-mail address is suewomyn@msn.com.

1965

T. Alan Hurwitz was named president of National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, N.Y. He continues to retain his role as vice president and dean for RIT.

Seventies
1970
The Rev. Dr. Gary Armstrong has been appointed to the position of senior pastor at First United Methodist Church in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Cheryl (Weale) Viola has lived since 1974 in Youngstown, Ohio, where she met and married her husband. She teaches fourth grade in the Youngstown Public Schools.

1976

Robert Ellett accepted a position as director of IT Solutions at Vangent Inc. in Coralville, Iowa.

Dan Siebersma accepted the position of state librarian for South Dakota. He was previously director of the Lakeland Library Cooperative, a 41-member public library consortium in West Michigan.

1979
Patrick Floyd
accepted a position as chief operating officer for Nordic Cold Storage in Atlanta, Ga.

The Rev. Greg Hackett began an appointment as senior pastor at First United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas, on June 12, 2008.

Eighties

1984

Dr. William A. Irwin published an article in Volume 100 of the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.” The article stems from his cancer research conducted in Italy concerning how some pesticides can induce novel liver tumors without first causing genetic damage.

1986
John McGilligan
is in his second year as director of bands for Marina High School in Huntington Beach, Calif. His marching band was selected to perform at Disneyland as part of the Orange County Performing Arts Showcase. McGilligan received Marina’s Performing Arts Teacher  of the Year award, a student-selected award, in his first year at the school and this year was named the school’s Teacher of the Year as selected by the school’s administrators. Aside from teaching duties, McGilligan performs with the Huntington Beach Concert Band, is an avid runner and does local community theater.

1988

Earl Horlyk joined the news staff at the Sioux City Journal as a writer. He had previously been the editor of the Le Mars Daily Sentinel in Le Mars, Iowa, where he recently won an Iowa Newspaper Association Award for best feature personality story in Daily Class 1. His award-winning story was about the late Duane Van Der Wiede, a longtime postmaster in Maurice, Iowa.

Nineties

1992

Dave Schlabaugh was named the head boys’ basketball coach at Williamsburg High School in Iowa. He had been an assistant coach at Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman, Iowa, for the previous three years. Schlabaugh also accepted a special education teaching position at Williamsburg High School.


1994
Rexann (Kaler) Smith
achieved certification as a Registered Medical Assistant, a national certification of the American Medical Technologists. Smith is an instructor in the medical administrative assistant and medical assistant programs at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City.


1995

Eric Coleman accepted a position as regional underwriting director for Travelers Insurance in Overland Park, Kan.


Tracey Schumacher is a graphic artist at The Graphic Edge in Carroll, Iowa.
