James La Plante and his wife, Mardella, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August 2008 with a family trip to Kauai, Hawaii. He also celebrated his 50th anniversary with Boeing Company in Huntington Beach, Calif., on Dec. 8, 2008.

1970
The Rev. Ralph G. Benson is director of ministry and senior chaplain for Metropolitan Washington Airports Interfaith Chapels Inc. at Dulles International and Reagan National Airports near Washington, D.C. Benson is an American Baptist pastor and a retired Army chaplain after 30 years of military service. Some of his days begin with 4 a.m. Bible studies for French-speaking Congolese immigrants who handle baggage for United Airlines. He and his staff of 14 volunteers counsel with airline employees, numerous travelers and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees who ensure airline security. Over 36 million people travel through the airports in our nation’s capital.

Dr. Lynn Johnson was promoted to assistant dean for informatics and innovation at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in Ann Arbor.
Eighties
1980
Randy Hinkel, head football coach at Madrid High School in Madrid, Iowa, became the 16th football coach in Iowa prep history to amass 250 career victories when Madrid defeated sixth-ranked Earlham 27-24 in overtime on Oct. 10, 2008. Hinkel, the head coach at Madrid for the past 22 seasons, guided the team to an 11-2 record and a berth in the Class A semifinals in 2008. He was previously the head coach for seven years at Lohrville High School in Lohrville, Iowa.

Terry Alvarez accepted a position as the advertising director for the Butler Eagle in Butler, Pa. He was previously the classified advertising manager for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Before moving to Pennsylvania, Alvarez held various sales and management positions at the Sioux City Journal, The Arizona Republic, The Denver Post and the East Valley/Scottsdale Tribune.
Kelly (Pranke) Lenz accepted a position as an early childhood mental health consultant with the Erikson Institute in Chicago, Ill. Lenz and her family live in Peoria, Ill.
Nineties
1990
Crystal Bunge is director of the choir at Sioux Central High School in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, which won the 2008 Holiday Idol Competition sponsored by KICD Radio in Spencer, Iowa. As a result, the choir was the opening act for The Blenders on Dec. 14, 2008, at the Clay County Regional Events Center in Spencer. Besides directing the choir, Bunge also teaches fifth- through 12th-grade vocal music in the Sioux Central Community Schools.

Carol Tschampl-Diesing was chosen to be the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization’s 2008 High School Teacher of the Year for the state of Nebraska . Tschampl-Diesing is in her ninth year of teaching radio and television broadcasting at the Omaha Public Schools Career Center.
1996
Jason Lauritsen was one of the Ten Outstanding Young Omahans honored in January 2009 at a dinner at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. The awards, presented each year by the Omaha Jaycees, are given to individuals between the ages of 21 and 40 who strive for excellence and have a strong commitment to both community service and personal and professional development. Lauritsen is vice president of human resources for Union Bank and Trust. He also serves on the board for Habitat for Humanity of Omaha and a committee of the Nebraska Children’s Home Society.

Stacey (Jacobs) Baughman is a primary therapist for The Meadows in Wickenburg, Ariz. She obtained a master's degree in professional counseling, specializing in clinical counseling, from Ottawa University in 2006, was granted licensure by the National Board of Certified Counselors and the state of Arizona in 2007, and obtained an auricular detoxification specialist certification in 2008.
(Malibu) Kelly Boyce is the administrative coordinator for the New York City Early Childhood Professional Development Institute at the Research Foundation of The City University of New York.

Grant Wittstruck received the Emerging Artist Award at the national juried 2008 Des Moines Arts Festival held in June in Des Moines, Iowa. Wittstruck was one of 24 students selected to show and sell artwork alongside 175 professional artists at the festival. His photographic prints were on display at the Le Mars Art Center in Le Mars, Iowa, in August 2008. |
