ALUMNI NEWS


Fifties

1951

The Rev. Darrell Mitchell of Marshalltown, Iowa, will attend a mission study program that deals with Israeli and Palestinian issues held Feb. 3-15, 2008, in Israel, the West Bank, and Jerusalem. The mission study is sponsored by the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. Mitchell is an active runner and bowler and competed in the 50, 100, 200, and 400-meters at the 2007 South Dakota Senior Games held Sept. 6-8 at Mitchell, S.D. In 2006 he ran 400 meters in a time of 1 minute, 30 seconds.

 

Sixties

1969

James E. Hanthorne accepted a position as the Golf Teaching Professional (United States Golf Teachers Federation) at the Spencer Golf and Country Club in Spencer, Iowa, and as assistant golf coach for the Spencer High School Girls’ Golf Team.

 

Seventies

1973

Roxanne (Knudsen) Huseman works at Kids World Daycare Center in Sac City, Iowa.


Dr. Edward A. Johnson was named president of the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies in Grand Rapids, Mich. For almost 30 years, the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies has been a scientific center for Creation Care undergraduate environmental studies courses at four global campuses, as well as publications, forums and global warming analysis.


Larry "Mace" Mason retired from Sioux City Community Schools on May 31, 2007, after 34 years as a teacher and coach. He accepted a position as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Morningside College on Aug. 1, 2007. Go online to http://www.morningside.edu/mustangs/tennis/index.cfm for more

1976

Bonnie Jean Fear, an elementary school teacher librarian for Alburnett Community Schools in Alburnett, Iowa, was recognized for 30 years of service in education.


Eighties

1980

Timothy Orwig wrote the fact-filled text for the book “Historic Photos of Boston” (Turner, 2006). The book contains nearly 200 photographs which show Boston’s historic growth from the mid 1800s to the late 1900s. The book follows life, government, events and people important to Boston history.


1983

Sam Halferty received a master’s degree in information systems from DePaul University in Chicago, Ill., in June 2007. He accepted the position of manager of application development at the Institute of Food Technologists in Chicago in July 2007.


1986

Perry Borchard is vice president of finance and administration at The Foreign Candy Company Inc. in Hull, Iowa.


1989

Brenda (Wetherell) Kluger accepted a position as client service associate in the risk management department of Holmes Murphy & Associates in Des Moines, Iowa. She is also active in the Insurance Association of Greater Des Moines and Junior League of Des Moines.

2003

Sarah Paulsen accepted a position as travel and sales consultant at AAA in Sioux City.

George R. Thornton, Manchester, Mich., died Nov. 28, 2007.


1935

Dr. Clarence Christensen, Washburn, Wis., died Aug. 25, 2007.


1938

Frank Logan, Aurora, Colo., died Oct. 15, 2007.


1942

Dr. Anthony Kooiker, Orange City, Iowa, died Oct. 18, 2007.


1948

Marvella (Christians) Protexter, Sioux City, died Oct. 20, 2007. She was a member of the Morningside Alumni Association and was involved in the M-Club at Morningside College. She was an avid Morningside sports fan and enjoyed hosting dinners for Morningside College students, athletes, and staff. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Protexter, who was the longtime baseball coach at Morningside as well as a professor of economics and business.

John J. “Butch” Holincheck, Overland Park, Kan., died Oct. 24, 2007.

Sue (Hunter) Cottington, Emmetsburg, Iowa, died Sept. 26, 2007.

Remembering Cherished Friends

Annette W. Glover-Eberly, Lawton, Iowa, died Oct. 5, 2007. She was a voice instructor at Morningside from 1973 to 1975.
