1953
Robert Bates
received the 2009 Springfield City Schools Alumni of Distinction Award established by the Springfield Board of Education in Ohio to recognize former students of the city schools who have distinguished themselves through exemplary professional success and/or community service. Bates served 25 years as a special agent with the FBI. Upon retirement from the FBI in 1983, Bates was employed as a special agent for the U.S. Department of State and as a special investigator for the Pentagon Federal Credit Union. He received a lifetime achievement award for over 30,000 hours of volunteer work for the police department in Alexandria, Va. His volunteer efforts in Alexandria also have included work with the hospital and American Red Cross disaster team, cooking at the homeless shelter and tutoring at elementary schools. Bates has received gold medals in tennis in the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics and awards in the Northern Virginia Softball League.

Cheryl (Kovarna) Hardersen
retired in 2004 from teaching at West Monona High School in Onawa, Iowa, after 34 years as a business teacher there. Aside from her teaching duties, Hardersen was also a basketball and softball coach and was the school newspaper advisor. She is currently an administrative assistant at Westendorf Manufacturing Company in Onawa. Hardersen and her husband, Darrel, have been married for 38 years and have two children. Their daughter, Melissa Hardersen 1997, is the entertainment manager at the Harrah’s and Horseshoe casinos in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and their son, Jon, is a physician assistant at a sleep disorder clinic in Des Moines, Iowa.

William C. Delfs II
was elected to be the 2009 president of the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Iowa by the association’s board of directors. He will represent 2,400 members and 12 local chapters across the state, serving as the official spokesperson and helping set legislative policy. He also chairs the board for HBA of Iowa and serves as a liaison to the National Association of Home Builders in Washington, D.C. Delfs owns and operates Able Homebuilders with his brother, Jeff Delfs 1984.

Joe Klundt
accepted a position as senior lead contract administrator for The Boeing Company in Mesa, Ariz. He is responsible for structuring deals; preparing acquisition strategies; identifying, assessing and mitigating risks; customer negotiations; and interfacing with senior leadership from a company and customer perspective for a business unit with $1 billion in annual revenue.

Kyle Mallicoat
is employed with Omaha Standard in Council Bluffs, Iowa, as an inside sales representative for the firm’s distributors in the Midwest, South and Southwest. The company builds truck equipment, such as service bodies, platforms, hoists, lift gates and cranes. Kyle and his wife, Kelly (Sieh) Mallicoat 2006, live in Minden, Iowa.
