Sixties
1960
Don Nieuwendorp and his wife, Darlene, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner in June. They had previously celebrated with a cruise to Alaska.
1969
Al Baxter was inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame in April at the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. Baxter was a state champion during his high school career at Morning Sun and was an NCAA Division II All-American during his collegiate career at Morningside. He coached Lisbon High School to five state championships in nine years and later compiled a dual meet record of 376-119-5 during a 26-year coaching career at Buena Vista University, where he led the Beavers to eight conference team championships.
Seventies
1971
Dr. bill russell directed a production of “Pageant” that was staged as part of 2007 Kansas Summer Theatre at the University of Kansas. “Pageant” is a musical parody of beauty pageants and contestants that was co-written by russell.
Carolyn Stuhr retired at the end of the 2006-07 school year, following a 42-year teaching career, most recently at Irving Elementary School in Sioux City. She had been a Title I teacher in the Sioux City public schools since 1971. Her career also included time as a classroom teacher at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Sioux City.
1973
Monsignor Mark Duchaine was appointed vicar general and moderator of the Curia for the Diocese of Sioux City. He also serves as judicial vicar and is pastor at the St. Mary parishes in Mapleton and Oto, Iowa.
1975
Fran (Struve) Haack received a Siouxland Hero Award from the American Red Cross, Siouxland Area Chapter. Haack, a teacher for the past 32 years at Whiting Community Schools in Whiting, Iowa, was recognized for her years of dedication and commitment to education.

1980
Michael Nord Mistrall was among the playwrights selected to read from their works during the Great Plains Theatre Conference held in late May and early June at the Fort Omaha Campus of Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, Neb. He read from his play, “The Train to Mantua.” The play is set in the late 1960s at a small-town bus station in the South, where a soldier and a girl are getting to know each other as he waits to depart for Vietnam.

Terry Alvarez accepted a position as classified advertising manager at the Pittsburgh (Pa.) Post-Gazette. He was previously the classified advertising director at The East Valley/Scottsdale Tribune in Mesa, Ariz.
William C. Delfs II and Jeff L. Delfs 1984 are co-owners of Able Homebuilders in Sioux City, which received the 2006 Better Business Bureau Integrity Award for Small Businesses in Iowa.

Dennis Jensen was named manager for Pioneer Insurance Agency in Sioux City. He is responsible for insurance agency profitability by working to build the existing customer base and forming new relationships.

Dr. John Salmon is a physician at Cox Heath Center Branson in Branson, Mo.
Valorie Kruse was honored as the 2007 Siouxland Woman of the Year by Quota International of Sioux City. Kruse is a community volunteer who served two terms on the Sioux City Board of Education.

James Henrich is the principal at West Marshall High School in State Center, Iowa.
Pamela K. Reis Kluender was named chief financial officer for Story County Medical Center in Nevada, Iowa.
1989
Matthew Pointer is the administrative software analyst at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City. He also works with Datatel, online services, and related Help Desk issues.
Trudy (Moody) Rants was appointed director of the Children and Youth Ministries Program at Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City. Her duties include coordination of all Sunday school and youth activities for persons in nursery through high school.
Kip Turnquist was appointed to the position of senior financial analyst at the main downtown office of First Federal Bank in Sioux City. He is responsible for assisting in the monitoring and execution of the bank’s secondary mortgage marketing function and also the monitoring and reporting of the bank’s servicing portfolio and various financial and regulatory reports.

Shelley (Fuller) Heikens is the assistant cashier at the Savings Bank which opened in June 2007 in Lake Park, Iowa.

Beverly (Wallace) Bower is a special education consultant at Northwest Area Education Agency in Sioux City.
1996
Tanya Sherrill joined the Sioux City CPA firm of Dierking, Lockie & Associates, PC, as accounting manager.
1997
Joel Weyand was named the 2007 Admissions Professional of the Year at the Iowa Association of College Admissions Counseling’s (IACAC) annual conference in Okoboji, Iowa. Weyand was selected by a committee of his peer members of IACAC in recognition of his dedication to helping students at the post-secondary level. More than 163 individuals throughout Iowa were nominated for the award. Weyand served as director of admissions at Morningside from 1998 until 2007, when he was appointed assistant vice president advancement – constituent development.

Kristie (Miller) Arlt was appointed director of communications and development for the Diocese of Sioux City. She is responsible for developing communication programs that promote the growth of the church in Northwest Iowa. She also serves as spokesperson for the diocese and works with local and regional media. Arlt previously served as marketing coordinator at Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb.
Matt Campbell was promoted to commercial lender at Security National Bank in Sioux City.
Julie (Marsh) Cunningham accepted a position as an early childhood special education teacher at Northwest Area Education Agency’s service center in Le Mars, Iowa.
Shannon (Newman) Spanel received in May 2007 a Master of Science degree in curriculum and instruction from Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. Spanel is a fourth-grade teacher at Sunnyside Elementary School in Sioux City.

Theresa Hansen is a special education consultant at Northwest Area Education Agency in Sioux City.

2000
Jim Guttau was elected to the board of directors for CultureHaus, one of seven themed support groups for the Denver Art Museum. Guttau lives in Denver, Colo., where he is a freelance public relations consultant.
Sara (Chapman) Klingensmith is an early childhood special education teacher at Northwest Area Education Agency in Sioux City.
The Rev. Kathy Olson was ordained as an elder in June at the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in Ames. Olson is campus pastor and director of church relations at Morningside College.
Chris Sawyer accepted a position as educational service representative at Ray’s MIDBELL MUSIC in Sioux City. Sawyer makes service calls to music educators and music programs in the Siouxland region.

Dr. Marc Obbink joined the staff of Kruse-Manley Clinic of Chiropractic in Sioux City.

Tod J. Deck is an attorney at Deck Law firm in Sioux City.
Jaclyn (Weyand) Tungesvik is coordinator for high ability recruitment in the office of admissions at Iowa State University in Ames.
2004
Nichole Barto is an itinerant teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing at Northwest Area Education Agency in the Sioux City office. She provides the specialized evaluation, instruction and consultative services required to meet the unique educational needs of students with deaf or hard-of-hearing impairments.

Justin “Rudy” Pithan accepted a position as a reading teacher at Thunderbolt Middle School in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Wiley Mayne, Sioux City, died May 27, 2007. He was elected to Congress in 1966 and served eight years as a congressman from Iowa’s Sixth District from 1967 to 1975. He was past president of the Sioux City Symphony Association and the Sioux City Concert Course.
