Pre-Professional Programs

Faculty

Engineering
Engineering schools have generally encouraged students to pursue the first two or three years of their engineering program at a liberal arts college where the student can receive the direct faculty attention that is often critical in the intense, beginning engineering courses.

Law

Students interested in the practice of law generally pursue majors and minors in the traditional fields of the liberal arts. The admissions departments of law schools emphasize courses of study that include attention to skills in logical analysis, problem solving, text-based research, independent judgment, and argument. Successful preparation for law school includes majors as diverse as political science, English, philosophy, history, business administration, and economics. Students can choose a minor in legal studies (See History and Political Science). Students who prefer to do so may personally design an interdisciplinary major in pre-law studies or follow a standard model based upon law school recommendations.

Health Sciences

Dentistry: The pre-dental program at Morningside prepares students for entry into and success in graduate dental programs leading to the DDS degree. A science major and an internship are recommended.

Medicine: The goal of pre-medical study at Morningside College is to lay a foundation in basic scientific principles which can be applied in further study of medicine, medical teaching and research, or allied biological fields. Recommended majors for pre-medical study include biology, chemistry or physics. Careful advising and scheduling of additional science courses beyond the minimum requirements of medical schools contribute to a high acceptance rate and excellent performance of Morningside graduates who pursue a medical degree.

Medical Technology: A medical technologist is the member of the healthcare team who performs a wide variety of scientific fact-finding tests in the clinical laboratory. A Bachelor of Science degree with a major in medical technology can be earned by a student who completes 92 semester hours of appropriate college work, including at least 30 hours taken at Morningside College, and who completes 32 semester hours or their equivalent with at least a “C” average at any institution accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association. In addition to the general studies requirements, the medical technology major includes 20 semester hours of biology, 20 semester hours of chemistry, one course in math and one course in physics. Morningside College maintains affiliations with Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke’s Regional Hospital in Sioux City so that students may complete their clinical year locally if they meet admissions requirements. Admission to hospital programs is competitive and requires a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Optometry: Admission to optometry school may occur following completion of a baccalaureate degree. Admission requires completion of pre-professional level laboratory courses designed for science majors in biology, chemistry, and physics. Applicants are required to take courses in mathematics, English, humanities, and successful completion of the Optometry Admission Test (OAT).

Physical Therapy: Study in physical therapy begins with a bachelor’s degree and is completed with a doctorate or DPT and certification as a physical therapist. Highly competitive graduate programs require volunteer time spent with a professional therapist as well as Graduate Record Exam testing. A biology major is recommended for students pursuing this career to develop a strong background in the sciences; the faculty advisor for physical therapy Pre-Professional Programs will assist the student in planning course work that is most useful to their future plans.

Physician Assistant: Morningside College offers the first three years of course work leading to certification as a Physician Assistant (90 credit hours) which includes the courses in biology, chemistry, communication skills, psychology, and sociology to prepare a student for a twenty-four month program at a medical college. Students with appropriate course work may also apply after completion of a baccalaureate degree.

Pharmacy: Students interested in pharmacy take courses to prepare them for a professional program at a college of pharmacy. Depending on the professional program that is selected, a student may spend between one and four years at Morningside before transferring for professional training. Coursework in chemistry is particularly recommended.

Veterinary Medicine: A student at Morningside College who aspires to a career as a veterinarian has access here to the courses required to enter a graduate program in veterinary medicine. A biology or chemistry major is recommended, with specific course selection tailored for the particular demands of this career. Hands-on experience can be gained in an internship with a veterinary practice.

Dual Degree Option

Exceptional students who enter health professional programs early, before completing a baccalaureate degree, may transfer up to 30 hours of graduate work back to Morningside College to earn a B.S. degree here. They must have previously satisfied all graduation requirements, and they must have completed at least 30 hours of course work in residence at Morningside. Graduate course work can usually be counted toward a biology (or chemistry) major or minor. Students who pursue careers in chiropractic, dentistry, medicine, medical technology, optometry, physician’s assistant, podiatry, or veterinary medicine are eligible for this option. Credit and the baccalaureate degree would normally be awarded after successful completion of the first year of graduate work.

Ministry

Morningside College has a special concern for the development of religious vocations. Opportunities for careers include ordained ministry, youth work, Christian education, college or university teaching, counseling, and various forms of mission service. Morningside graduates are sought by graduate schools of religion and seminaries of many denominations.
