Music

Faculty

The purposes of the Morningside College Music Department are to provide a solid foundation in music that will prepare students for graduate study or for professional careers in music and to provide courses and experiences that broaden every liberal arts student's awareness of music. The objectives for the Music Department are consistent with those of the entire institution, and they are stated to the public through various means, including the college catalog, brochures, newsletters, and news releases. The curriculum is designed to provide a conceptual understanding of the musical properties of rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, texture, and form, and their interrelationships as they form a basis for listening, composing, performing and teaching.

There are three major degree programs: the Bachelor of Arts in Music (B.A.) which provides a flexible program for students who seek careers related to music; the Bachelor of Music Performance (B.M.) for students aspiring to become performing artists or teachers of performance; and the Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.), which enables students to meet requirements that lead to a special certificate for teaching music in public and private schools. Each degree program provides preparation for advanced study at the graduate level.

Non-majors are encouraged to enhance their musical development through participation in musical ensembles and applied study. It is possible, with the instructor's permission, for non-majors to enroll in music courses designed for majors after an interview and/or demonstration of prerequisite knowledge.

The Department of Music is a member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
