This three-week course will focus on the power of the visual. We will look at art through print and digital reproduction, and face to face. We will spend 5 days in New York City, looking at art and experiencing the city that is home to much significant art of the twentieth century. Students may choose to write, make a piece of art, or document in some way the experience of looking at art.
Calendar
Week 1: May 12-16
Introduction and exposure to art through reproduction (books, internet, video).
The Helen Levitt Gallery, the Sioux City Art Center, and a day trip to Omaha will provide opportunities to look at physical art. The final project will be discussed.
Week 2: May 19 – 23
Visit New York City! Visits to the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum will be included, as well as options for music and theatre. We will stay at the YMCA in Manhattan, which is both highly recommended and affordable. Fine dining and Central Park in bloom will be part of the experience.
Week 3: May 26 – 30
Development of the final project. Students may choose to write, make a piece of art, or document in some way the experience of looking at art.
The trip to New York City
The cost is $1300.00, which pays for the following:
* Roundtrip Air from Omaha, NE to New York City via Northwest Airlines
* Four (4) Nights Accommodation at a the YMCA Hotel West Side 63rd ST
Rooms are configured as follows: singles, doubles (bunk beds) and quad occupancy. Shared bathrooms are down the hall.

Also included are:
- transportation from La Guardia Airport to the YMCA
- visits to private art galleries to view the work of currently practicing artists
- a view inside the graduate studios at the School of Visual Arts
- time to walk in Central Park and explore the city
Payments must be made to the Business Office as follows:
1. $300 deposit by Oct 1, 2007
2. $300 by Nov 1, 2007
3. $350 by Jan 10, 2008
4. $350 by Feb 10, 2008
The first deposit is non-refundable.
The remaining payments are refundable according to the following schedule:
100% until Nov 15, 2007.
90% until Dec 15, 2007.
70% until Jan 15, 2008.
50% until Feb 15, 2008.
25% until March 15, 2008.
No refund is available after April 1, 2008.
